Ranchi sees 59% surge in dog bite cases amid stray dog crisis; Civic body inactive

Ranchi has experienced a significant rise in dog bite cases, with a 59 percent increase in people receiving anti-rabies injections over the past two years. According to Ranchi Sadar Hospital data, 4,715 individuals received the injection in August 2023. This figure rose to 7,503 by August 2025. In June 2025 alone, 6,815 people were administered the anti-rabies vaccine at the hospital.

The Ranchi Municipal Corporation has not taken any concrete measures to control the growing stray dog population in the city. The organization Hope and Animal Trust is engaged in sterilization and vaccination programs for street dogs. Since 2007, the trust has sterilized more than 133,000 stray dogs in Ranchi. Currently, the trust sterilizes approximately 18 to 20 dogs daily in the Chutia area.

On August 11, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the stray dog menace and issued orders for the removal of stray dogs from residential areas in Delhi-NCR. The bench, headed by Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan, directed strict action against any organizations that obstruct such efforts. This order was issued during the hearing of a case concerning stray dogs in urban residential areas.

Hope and Animal Trust continues to focus on managing the stray dog population through sterilization and vaccination to reduce risks associated with dog bites. The recent data on increased anti-rabies injections indicates a rising public health concern related to dog bites in Ranchi.
